On the rental market for the first time ever last year, Tavern House is in a superb position on the seafront with wonderful sea views. The world-renowned Hotel Tresanton is nearby and both Henry VIII’s picturesque St Mawes Castle and the harbour with its wide range of shops and facilities are within easy walking distance. There are sea views from almost all rooms across St Mawes bay with its moorings and to St Anthony’s Headland opposite. The Lizard peninsula acts as a distant backdrop to a range of boatcraft plying the waters between St Mawes, Falmouth, Helford and beyond, including the popular St Mawes-Falmouth ferry. Tavern is also ideally placed for the beach. It sits in the centre of the seafront houses lining the wall immediately above the popular Tavern Beach and is equidistant between both beach access points: it’s easy to see why Tavern gives its name to the beach.

Thought to date back to 16th century, it is a house full of character. Legend has it that the house was initially built as an inn to serve Henry VIII’s newly built castle and its visitors. The front door leads into the hall and a curved coat cupboard, said to have been made from a boat hull. A large sitting room to the right of the hall has a range of comfortable sofas and chairs, a TV, DVD and French doors which open onto the sea views and seating in the front garden. Wifi is available. On the left of the hall is the dining room with table and chairs seating 8, again with French doors opening onto the front garden. The practical kitchen is well equipped with electric cooker, dishwasher, fridge and freezer and leads to the utility room which houses the washing machine, dryer and extra sink. The back garden is accessed from the kitchen via steep steps to a small grassed area.

There is a downstairs wet room with shower, WC, hand basin and underfloor heating.

Stairs to the first floor lead to the spacious family bathroom, with its 6ft cast iron bath, WC and hand basin. There are three front bedrooms with uninterrupted sea views (a master bedroom with double king-size bed; a twin & single room). A fourth room with a double bed and a fifth single room (entered via the front twin) are at the back of the house.

The front garden is paved and has a small table, seating and extensive sea views. This is just the place to relax and watch the sea - or check out what is happening over the wall on the beach below.

Sleeping eight, this is a comfortable house which provides good, versatile accommodation.

Parking is available in the village car park.

Amazing location. A few things could be improved.

"This house has a lovely feeling about it and has the most wonderful location on the seafront. It's very spacious and we found it clean and tidy. Portscatho Holidays were helpful and prompt in dealing with any little issues. My suggestions on things that could be improved (and it all depends whether you think these sorts of things will bother you or not): the sofas and chairs in the sitting room are beyond their best by some years (decades!). There are throws over them so they didn't look awful but they are not particularly comfortable; we felt the mattress (king size in front bedroom) could do with a mattress topper as it's quite hard and the kitchen is as others have stated, is very old fashioned. I guess the owners are not going to change that as it would be a big expensive job but I would say that if you are foodie types and are planning to cook lots of complicated meals for 8 people you will find it a bit tricky with the work surface available and the size of the oven. We did think we might re-book it for next year but in the end there was a house a few doors away which was totally modernised and was less expensive so we booked that one instead. Overall we did enjoy our stay, though."

Charming lovely house

"Absolutely loved location. Oven rather small for catering on mass but not the end of the world.... !! Sofas could do with being replaced. Really old and decrepit and for the money would have hoped for something slightly better, same with Mattresess too but they didnt matter quite as much. Overall excellent property that we are completely in love with. Charming and excellent location. "

Fab house in a fab location :)

"Have stayed in quite a few cottages/houses in St Mawes in recent years and this has to be one of the best ones. Chose to stay at Tavern House due to location & number of bedrooms. Lovely clean house, large comfortable bedrooms with amazing sea views. (Need to put bedroom images of rooms onto website) Retro style kitchen, suited our needs. Spacious sitting room & dining room however sofas in sitting room need padding. Would suggest adding a shower over the bath. Weather was fab at beginning of our holiday which meant we could sit in the front garden listening to the waves below. Overall fab house and will definitely be back soon"
