Cornwall Cultural Highlights

From outdoor theatre to traditional cinema experiences, your South Cornwall holiday cottage is the best seat in the house!

1 Kneehigh Theatre

From small beginnings on the cliffs of Gorran Haven, Kneehigh has grown into one of the UK’s most acclaimed theatre companies, staging its work in London's West End and even on Broadway – but especially around the Roseland Peninsula. In fact the Cornish poet Charles Causley called it “Cornwall's National Theatre... one of the brightest jewels in Cornwall's crown.” You can currently see the players in their own Asylum theatre at the Lost Gardens of Heligan, but as well as stage-based shows you might just catch them on their Kneehigh Rambles, out and about near your Roseland self-catering cottage collecting stories and folklore to turn into poems, tales, puppetry and dialogues.

2 Miracle Theatre This versatile Cornish touring group pops up in all sorts of unexpected places. Throughout the summer season open-air performances could happen anywhere from South Cornwall's beaches and clifftops to gardens and castles; but you'll find them all year round in venues ranging from village halls to large theatres. Miracle's work is a collaboration between actors, artists, writers, musicians and creators of all kinds, using technology and traditional storytelling for audiences of all ages. They're hugely talented and absolutely delightful, so do take in a Miracle Theatre performance if you can.

3 Minack Theatre

For a day out from your Roseland holiday cottage, theatre-lovers should not miss a trip to the unique, open-air Minack Theatre. Perched on a cliff high above the sea at Porthcurno, you'll find drama, music, comedy and story-telling in all their guises. A magical experience, but beware if you suffer from vertigo!

4 St Mawes Hidden Cinema

A cosy evening for two or a great way to amuse the kids on a rainy morning, this state-of-the-art cinema in St Mawes has 25 comfy seats complete with fluffy blankets, plus refreshments and a bar. Screenings cover everything, from blockbusters and independent films to sporting events and opera screenings. Wonderfully handy from your seaside holiday cottage!
